Angel Shoutout: Katie Stagliano

Katie Stagliano: Katie’s Krops

Katie Stagliano, a 14-year-old student at the Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville, S.C., is the feature of our third Angel Shoutout.

It all started out with a seedling.

In 2008, 9-year-old Katie Stagliano brought a tiny cabbage seedling home from school as part of the Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program. As she cared for her cabbage, it grew to 40 pounds. Knowing her cabbage was special, Katie donated her cabbage to a soup kitchen where it helped to feed more than 275 people. Moved by the experience of seeing how many people could benefit from the donation of fresh produce to soup kitchens, Katie decided to start vegetable gardens and donate the harvest to help feed people in need.

Katie first found help with her dream from Amazing-Kids.Org, but she didn’t stop there. Her school also donated a huge plot of land for a garden.  The whole school kindergarten to 12th grade is currently helping and the harvest is donated to feed the hungry people.  From there, Katie contacted Fields to Families and asked them if they could help. But Katie is still not stopping there.  Her hope is to continue the growth of her organization to help eliminate world hunger.

Today, Katie’s Krops donates thousands of pounds of fresh produce from numerous gardens to organizations that help people in need. The organization now has over 60 youth run gardens growing, from Maine to Hawaii.  The mission of Katie’s Krops is to start and maintain vegetable gardens of all sizes and donate the harvest to help feed people in need, as well as to assist and inspire others to do the same. The problem of hunger is real, Katie’s Krops mission is simple, we all can help because…

It only takes a seedling!
